| Election is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health, and is awarded to those who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health. Riviere is the first NC State faculty member elected to the Institute of Medicine. Nine NC State faculty members belong to the National Academy of Sciences; nine others hold membership in the National Academy of Engineering.
Riviere, who joined the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1981, is also the co-founder and co-director of the USDA-supported Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD). He is also chair of NC State's Research Committee.
Riviere's primary research focus is the development of pharmacokinetic models to study the absorption and transport of drugs and chemicals across the skin. Results of these studies have been used to develop transdermal drug delivery approaches as well as revise risk assessment approaches for topical chemical exposure to occupational and environmental chemicals. In the veterinary arena, this modeling approach is applied to food safety in the prediction of drug and chemical residues in the edible tissues of food-producing animals.
“I am simply overwhelmed and honored to have been elected,” Riviere said. “This selection supports my contention that the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State ranks as one of the best in the United States. I am thankful for the efforts of all my faculty colleagues, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and technical staff in our Center whom deserve to share in the honor this recognition brings.”
Riviere received his bachelor's degree in biology (summa cum laude) and master's degree in endocrinology from Boston College, and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Ph.D. in pharmacology from Purdue University. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Zeta and Sigma Xi. He serves on the Science Board of the Food and Drug Administration. His honors include the 1999 O. Max Gardner Award from the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina, the 1991 Ebert Prize from the American Pharmaceutical Association, and the Harvey W. Wiley Medal and FDA Commissioner's Special Citation.
He is the editor of the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and has published more than 350 full-length research papers and chapters, authored or co-authored seven books, and holds five U.S. patents.
Riviere has been married for 27 years to Dr. Nancy Monetiro-Riviere, a professor at NC State. They have three children: Christopher, Brian and Jessica. |
