Tito Sierra, a digital technologies development librarian with NCSU libraries, has a lot of experience in thinking of creative ways to bring information to people: he got his start at Amazon.com when that company was in its infancy.
“For me, it’s always been about improving access to quality information,” says Sierra. “I was drawn to library work because there are so many interesting problems to solve, and decisions are not dictated by short term goals—I have time to do things the right way.”
And he has. Named a top “mover and shaker” of 2006 by Library Journal, Sierra has streamlined the NCSU Libraries search engine, as well as its online card catalog, making both much more powerful and user-friendly. Currently, he’s working on ways to give students customized search pages that “know” what courses the student is taking and display information related to those courses when they log on.
Making research relevant to students in the digital age—a goal that will help future generations of North Carolinians achieve success. |
