| This week, NC State: Achieve! features Marie Blanchard, a single mother of two and NC State student. No late-night parties for this distance education student; instead, she’ll be cooking dinner and cracking the books with her two daughters. As a single mom of two school-age kids, Marie balances a number of demands on her time. Like many modern moms, Marie juggles a 40-hour work week, the kids‘ nightly homework and school events, cheerleading practice, and her own undergraduate studies. In the Blanchard household, study time is a family event. Marie is now finishing her undergraduate degree in sociology with a criminal justice concentration. She is completing her course work via distance education. From courses delivered by videocassette to media-rich Internet-based classes, she has experienced NC State Distance Education in all its forms. She hopes to graduate spring 2004. “Working full-time and being a single parent does not leave me much time for attending classes on campus. Through distance education, I can balance the demands of my job and time with my two daughters. Without distance education, I would not be able to finish my degree,” Blanchard says.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Marie plans to continue her education in graduate
school.
